HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY

Holocaust Remembrance Day is an international memorial day on 27 January which marks the anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp Auschwitz – Birkenau by Soviet troops in 1945. In the period between 1933 and 1945, the Nazis and their collaborators across Europe persecuted millions of people. They treated them extremely inhuman, deprived them of dignity and finally killed. In 2005, United Nations General Assembly adopted a formal resolution on the commemoration of this day. The resolution calls on all UN member states to honor the memory of Holocaust victims. Moreover, this resolution encourages the development of educational programs, which aims to show the determination to help prevent genocide in the future. On the occasion of this anniversary, the coordinator of the Association for Social Research and Communication (UDIK), Edvin Kanka Cudic, has said:

„Today, we need to remember of all the horrors and inhumanities that Jews, Roma, Slavs and LGBT people experienced during the Second World War, which left us in the obligation to constantly and consistently warn of the inadmissibility of extremism and exclusivity, as well as to raise future generations to the spirit of peace and true tolerance, that is to teach them how to respect the rule of law, moral values, and protect the weaker, other and different. Only in this way can we establish the basis for the survival and progress of a democratic society.“

„We believe that the UN resolution of 2005 is a good example which should lead society in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We should practice it in our community and thus contribute to prevent the repetition of our tragic past. Also, we consider that as long as we are not ready enough to mark crimes that are related to our close past, we should not show the hypocrisy by marking exclusively international dates,” Cudic has said.

On the occasion of this anniversary, UDIK’s activists will attend the commemoration organized by Jewish Community in Sarajevo. The commemorative ceremony will be held out on Friday, January 26, 2018 in the Jewish Community Center in Sarajevo at 11.00 am.
